SURF TO WEAR THEMED JERSEYS; GOLF
TOURNEY NETS OVER $2,000
Atlantic City, N.J. – The
Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League have announced
further details about “Strike Out Autism Night,” taking
place on Saturday, July 26 when the Surf face Quebec. Fifty
percent of the proceeds from all advance ticket sales for
the game will be donated to two autism-related charities,
FACES of Autism and Autism Speaks. Fans buying tickets at
the gate will also be given the opportunity to donate to the
two charities, and information about autism awareness will
be distributed in the concourse throughout the evening.
In addition, the team will be
wearing themed jerseys, sponsored by a friend of the Surf
who wishes to remain anonymous. The jerseys are navy blue
with a jigsaw puzzle design on the shoulders, symbolizing
autism awareness and the complexity of the brain disorder.
The jerseys will be auctioned off to fans after the game,
with proceeds going to the two charities.
The Surf also recently raised
money for FACES by holding a golf tournament at Harbor Pines
Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., on Tuesday, May 13.
With manager Cecil Fielder, outfielder Clyde
Williams and club president Chris Carminucci
participating in the event, the club was able to donate over
$2,000.
“We’re thankful to all of our
sponsors, donors and players who made our golf tournament
successful. The club is looking forward to ‘Strike Out
Autism Night’ as well, and it should be a great evening to
increase autism awareness,” Carminucci said.
Based in Ventnor, N.J., FACES
(Families for Autistic Children Education and Support) is a
non-profit organization dedicated to education and support
of children with autism and their families.
New York City-based Autism
Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism
spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes,
prevention, treatments and cure for autism, and to
advocating for the needs of affected families.
RIGHTY HURLER SHORTELL SHIPPED DOWN
PARKWAY
Atlantic City, N.J. –
The Surf have acquired righthanded pitcher Rory Shortell
from the New Jersey Jackals in exchange for a player to
be named later.
Shortell spent the last five
seasons in the Houston Astros’ organization. In 2007, with
Salem of the Carolina League, the Portland, Ore., native
went 7-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 45 appearances, mostly out of
the bullpen. Shortell struck out 66 hitters while walking
only 27 in 100.1 innings of work. It was his third season in
Salem, having pitched a total of 103 games with the
Avalanche, 69 of them in relief.
The 26-year-old was
originally chosen in the third round of the 2002 draft by
the Astros out of San Diego State University.
To make room for Shortell on the roster, rookie
pitcher Mike Pasch was released.
