Lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, Mays Landing, New Jersey

Uniformed patrol supervisors Sergeant Eugene Maier and Sergeant Robert Evans were on routine patrol when they heard multiple gunshots.  They reported hearing multiple shots then a pause and then more shots.  At the same time Atlantic City Police dispatch received many calls of shots fired in the area of 1400 block of Brooks Court (North Tennessee Avenue area).  Numerous patrol units responded to the area.  K-9 Officer William Tracy observed two males walking on Tennessee Avenue at Caspian Avenue which is one half block from the shooting.  Melvin Wilson was found to be possession of a handgun.  He was arrested and charged.  The other male was interviewed and subsequently released without charges.   The Detectives are continuing to interview residents in the area for additional information.

There were no reported persons struck by gunfire.  At least four residences reported damage to their apartment plate glass sliding windows by gunfire.  The windows were shattered. 

Follow up investigation revealed that there was more than one handgun involved in the damage to the homes and vehicles.   

Parked vehicles were struck by gunfire, including an unoccupied parked 1998 Safety school bus.  A tire on the school bus was flattened by gunfire.   

 

This is an active investigation.
