Subject: Sunday Shows Examine Obama's Shifting Positions & Damaged Brand

Conversations on today's Sunday morning shows focus on the impact of Obama's ever-changing, politically expedient positions on critical issues:

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON: "The problem has to do with, is this a winning strategy?  I think it’s undercutting his brand.  His brand is he's a leader who stands up for what he believes, who can motivate people to work with him.  And when he puts his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing, it is undercutting the Obama brand." (ABC, 6/29/08)

BYRON YORK: "The bigger thing is this really opens up the door to John McCain and his whole country first over political expediency.  This is the guy, Obama, who said he would filibuster any surveillance bill that included immunity for the telecoms.  Now he said it's okay.  This is a guy whose position on guns is unclear.  This is not an accident that you're seeing McCain’s country first, over political expediency come out at the same time." (ABC, 6/29/08)

CHUCK TODD: “… [W]hat it has allowed McCain to begin to paint is this narrative of, ‘You know what? This guy, Obama, you know, he makes all these promises and then suddenly he acts like a typical politician.’ And I think that a couple of more of these things and suddenly McCain might be able to sell this message that, you know, as much as you might think Obama's going to be the guy that might challenge his Party, look at John McCain. He's a guy that has been challenging his Party for seven years… [I]t allows McCain to start saying, ‘You know what? He's flipping on this, he's now flipping on guns, he's now flipping on this other issues,’ and it possibly paints a picture of a guy who will just say and do anything to get elected.” (NBC, 6/29/08)

BRIT HUME: "... [T]he campaign finance shift was dramatic, unexpected, and utter.  Similarly, on this issue of the terror surveillance bill.... So these changes, these shifts he's undergoing, are remarkable.  The one on D.C. gun ban is amazing.  He said he supported the D.C. gun ban.  The Supreme Court comes along and says that's unconstitutional and says, 'I agree with that.'  It almost makes you laugh." (FOX, 6/29/08)
