STATEMENT FROM MICHAEL MURPHY
Chairman of
Andrews for Senate Campaign on NJ 101.5 FM
Debate
|
CHERRY HILL --
Statement by Michael Murphy, Chairman of the
Andrews for Senate campaign, on the NJ 101.5
FM Senatorial debate:
Tonight's
debate showed beyond any doubt why Frank
Lautenberg should not be returned to the
United States Senate. He blatantly
misrepresented his staunch support for
the Iraq War, casting himself as an
opponent when, in fact, he repeatedly
voiced his support for the invasion both
before his election in 2000 and in the
months after he returned to the Senate.
When challenged by Rob Andrews on his
statements supporting President Bush's
war policy, Sen. Lautenberg had the
audacity to say that his statements were
"just words."
Frank
Lautenberg's eagerness to engage in the
tired, old attack politics only a few
minutes after the debate began was
jarring. It is that kind of politics
that has millions of Americans seeking
change and a new approach to solving our
problems in Washington. The kind of
leadership based on fresh ideas and a
clear vision for the future - not on
partisan infighting.
Congressman Andrews, by contrast,
responded directly to questions on the
issues. He gave detailed, articulate
answers that showed his command of the
issues and his respect for the voters.
Sen.
Lautenberg's angry, evasive and
inarticulate performance clearly
demonstrates why he waited until the
final weekend of this campaign to
debate. Frank Lautenberg denied New
Jersey's Democratic voters their right
to a series of debates on the serious
issues we face. Now we know why.
