Submissions from 2nd
District High School Students for Annual Congressional Art
Competition
Congressman to Announce Winner Friday Night
at Public Viewing of All Pieces
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S.
Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) today released the
names and schools of participating artists from Southern New
Jersey for the 2008 Congressional Art Competition, hosted by
the U.S. House of Representatives. Last year’s winner, Ryan
Carroll from Oakcrest High School, has his artwork “Go!
Go! Self-Portrait! Go!” currently on display in the
tunnel from the House of Representatives Office Buildings to
the U.S. Capitol.
“The overwhelming response
from South Jersey students has been simply outstanding. I am
pleased to have my office participate in the annual
Congressional Art Competition, which rightly recognizes the
ingenuity and creativity of young artists in our
communities,” said LoBiondo. “I look forward to sharing our
students’ art pieces with the public on Friday, and
announcing whose contribution will be displayed in
Washington for all visitors to see.”
The winning submission will
be displayed for one year in the tunnel connecting the
Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol, which is
part of the main tour route of visitors to the U.S. Capitol.
The second and third place submissions will be displayed in
LoBiondo’s Washington, DC and Mays Landing offices,
respectively.
Additionally, this year the
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
and honorable mention place winners will be receiving cash
awards from the Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund, which approached
Congressman LoBiondo in order to participate in the annual
event. The Fund commemorates the life of local writer, poet
and photographer Jennifer Cakert, who died in June 2006.
More information on the Atlantic City-based Jan-Ai
Scholarship Fund can be found at
http://jan-ai.com/.
(The cash gift has been reviewed and approved by the
Committee on the Standards of Official Conduct in the House
of Representatives.)
The public viewing and
announcement reception will be held Friday, May 16th
from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Ivy League Mortgage in Linwood
(Cornerstone Commerce Center, 1201 New Road, Suite 140).
Judging the students’ submissions at Friday’s reception will
be: Lorraine Thompson, a graphic designer at the Atlantic
City Hilton; Kathleen Arleth of Greate Bay Gallery in Somers
Point; Dara Ellis of the Cornerstone Commerce Center
Executive Office; Joe Duffy from the Jai Ai Scholarship
Fund; and, Eric Weeks of EZ Memories Photography in Linwood.
“I want to personally thank
Ivy League Mortgage for again offering to be host to the
public viewing and reception for the young artists, the
Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund for its generous gifts to the
winning entries, and the judges who have volunteered their
time to participate,” concluded LoBiondo.
