Freeholder Alisa Cooper’s Statement from the
March 31, 2009
Freeholder Meeting Regarding the 2009 Budget
First, I want to thank the Administration for providing
the budget, in advance, so it could be reviewed and I
also want to thank the budget task force committee for
their hard work on this project.
In these economic times, the only commentary that I wish
to make is that we have to continue to do -- more with
less -- and to experience efficiency in creative and
common sense ways. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't be
budget conscious; but rather, more conscious to
efficiency.
Because of the economic times, we are forced to realize
that government shouldn’t be any different than the
American family, who follows a tight budget. Where money
can be saved -- it should -- and where a difference can
be made -- make it happen.
Even in these times of economic crises in Atlantic
County, we need to preserve and protect services and
programs to those in greatest need. Under these
circumstances, we must continue to take opportunities as
they arise and to focus on effective solutions -- not
politically expedient ones.
These times that we are living in call for putting aside
personal and partisan differences and finding
solutions. We must be conscientious and continue our
efforts in the months ahead to save money where
reasonably possible. We must proceed together -- with
our eyes open and our minds receptive to real solutions.
At this time, I would be remiss if I didn‘t thank the
thousands of employees who participated in the voluntary
furlough program. I believe I speak for all of my
colleagues on the Board -- to extend our appreciation
to those employees who made that sacrifice. And,
speaking of employees, one more, very special -- thank
you -- to all of the county employees, who make Atlantic
County - a great place to live, work, play and raise a
family. In closing, I will be voting -- YES -- on the
budget.
