Brigantine Historical Museum Opens With
A History Challenge to Brigantine Students
On Saturday, May 17, the Brigantine Historical
Museum will open for it’s sixteenth season. This time,
however, the opening comes with a challenge, a contest, and
three prizes to qualifying Brigantine student entrants.
“The officers and staff of the museum decided to create
an event and competition that would draw the city’s children
in to both make them aware of the museum and to learn of
Brigantine’s very interesting past,” says Andrew Solari, the
President of the museum’s Board of Trustees. “Very few towns
in South Jersey can share the variety of experiences and
events that this small island community has. We’ve also had
a group of wonderful volunteers over the years who have
contributed items and documented our history,” he added.
Kathy Joyce, a retired teacher and museum volunteer,
put together three sets of questions for children, according
to the levels in which they are enrolled. The first set is
for children grades 3 and 4. The second set, grades 5 and 6
and the last set, grades 7 and 8. A flyer, notifying
students of the event, was circulated within the Brigantine
public schools, through the cooperation of Superintendent,
Dr. Robert Previti. The flyer invites the children to visit
the museum on either Saturday,May 17 or Sunday, May 17 to
take part in the challenge.
Upon entering the museum, the children will be handed a
quiz sheet, divided into age and grade groups and each
containing ten questions, dealing with Brigantine history.
The answers to all the questions can be easily found in the
museum. There will be volunteers at the museum to assist the
students and parents or guardians are encouraged to help the
kids. Some of the questions will deal with a railroad that
once came to the island, or a World War Two event that took
place off our shores or on the pre-European residents who
lived here. Upon completion, the questionnaires will be
turned in to the museum. Correct entries will then be put
into a drawing and a winner, in each grade group will be
chosen and awarded a $50 Savings Bond.

“The idea is to make our local children aware of the museum,
of Brigantine’s history, and to learn how to develop
research techniques and, perhaps, an appetite for delving
into even a broader history,” says Andy Solari. “We hope
that Brigantine’s children and their parents will take part
in the museum’s re-opening.”
