September 10, 2009
Honorable Jon S. Corzine
Governor, State of New Jersey
State House
P.O. Box 001
Trenton, New Jersey 08625
Dear Governor Corzine:
I am writing you regarding the alleged sexual incident
involving on duty firefighters and young women which
took place inside an Atlantic City firehouse on May 16,
2009. According to news reports, this behavior included
two 16-year old females, and a 19-year old female.
Upon learning of this situation, the public demanded an
investigation. On yesterday, September 9th,
we learned that the Atlantic County Prosecutor, Ted
Housel, announced his findings which concluded that no
charges would be filed. Our community is outraged by
this decision. I am concerned with the way matters are
being investigated and handled by Mr. Housel. We find
that this decision is unacceptable. There have been too
many questions which have been unanswered. The fact
that this matter took several months to conclude is
questionable as well.
As the President of City Council, I am compelled to
request an independent investigation to be conducted by
the Attorney General’s Office. We are looking for
answers and we want justice. Many in this community
believe that recent decisions made by Mr. Housel have
shown preferential treatment to certain individuals.
As a result, we could find ourselves in a volatile
situation. We hope we can count on you.
On behalf of City Council and the residents of Atlantic
City, thank you for your anticipated assistance. If you
have any questions or would like to discuss this matter
further, please call me at 609 377-7119.
Sincerely,
William H. Marsh
Council President
