STATE SENATOR JIM WHELAN & ATLANTIC CITY COUNCILMAN
MARTY SMALL WILL BOTH HAVE THEIR ATLANTIC CITY SCHOOL
POSITIONS ELIMINATED ...
Whelan will have bumping rights ... Small will be out
altogether.
"Hurley in the Morning"
has learned and confirmed that the present tough
economic times will diretly affect two prominent
Atlantic County elected officials.
Initially, the Atlantic City public schools district
thought that they might have to cut an additional $ 10
million dollars for next year. After much careful study,
they will ultimately cut an additional $ 2 million
dollars.
However, state senator Jim Whelan's swimming program and
his position will be eliminated. Whelan has decades of
seniority, thus he will be able to bump his way back
into the classroom ... in a basic skills teaching
position or something like that.
Atlantic City Councilman Marty Small will not be so
fortunate. Small's position and the entire after school
athletics program will be eliminated. Small has no
bumping rights ... he'll be out following Board of
Education approval of the District's spending plan.
Additionally, voters will have to approve the plan in
this April's school board elections.
No other current employee will lose their position at
this time, except for non renewals and those retiring
(will not be replaced).
The middle school after school program is also being
eliminated.
