Atlantic County Freeholder Board Chairman James Curcio, R-Atlantic announced his candidacy for Atlantic County Surrogate today, live on-the-air. Curcio appears to have cleared the Republican field, and, will take on the incumbent one-term Surrogate James Carney, D-Atlantic on November 2, 2010. Carney is a former Republican, who defeated then Republican Ed McGettigan by a narrow margin more than 4 years ago. This is a five year term, and the position is a Constitutional Office in Atlantic County. McGettigan is now the Democratic Atlantic County Clerk, after switching political parties a year after his loss to Carney. McGettigan defeated Freeholder Board Secretary Sonya Harris in that election. Carney switched to become a Democrat a year before McGettigan, when he was an Atlantic County Freeholder. Developing.
